Payment Method Customization

The Payment Method Customization leverages Shopify Functions to give you granular control over your checkout payment options. It allows you to dynamically Hide, Rename, or Reorder payment gateways based on specific conditions found in the cart, customer profile, or shipping details.

This tool is essential for merchants who need to restrict specific payment methods for certain products, customer groups, or shipping destinations.

Playbook

"Stop confusing your customers with irrelevant payment options. Take full control of your checkout by hiding high-fee gateways for small orders, renaming vague manual payment methods for clarity, and tailoring the payment list specifically to who is buying—reducing friction and operational headaches instantly."

The "Why" & The Metrics

  • Primary Metric Impact: Conversion Rate (CR) & Operational Efficiency (reduced fraud/returns).

  • The Psychological Trigger: Clarity & Cognitive Ease (removing decision fatigue by hiding irrelevant options) and Trust (renaming generic methods to specific, trusted terms).

  • Best Fit Industries: B2B/Wholesale, Cross-Border E-commerce, High-Risk/Regulated Industries (Vape/CBD), and Made-to-Order businesses.

Strategic Use Cases (The "Plays")

Play #1: The Clarity Booster (Activation)

  • The Concept: Rename generic manual payment methods to set clear expectations.

  • The Logic: Default Shopify manual payments often have generic names like "Bank Deposit." Changing this to "Wire Transfer via Chase Bank" reduces anxiety and clarifies the action.

  • Configuration Strategy:

    • Trigger/Condition: "Standard Input" (Apply to all users).

    • Key Setting: Select Change Name campaign.

    • Copy/Creative Idea: Rename "Custom Payment" to "Pay via Invoice (Net 30)".

Play #2: The Margin Protector (Profitability)

  • The Concept: Hide expensive or risky payment methods for specific orders.

  • The Logic: Cash on Delivery (COD) or "Buy Now, Pay Later" (BNPL) options often carry higher fees or return rates. Disable them for low-margin products or international shipments.

  • Configuration Strategy:

    • Trigger/Condition: "Shipping Input" (International) or "Line Item Qualifier" (Low margin product).

    • Key Setting: Select Conditionally Remove Gateways. Target Cash on Delivery.

    • Copy/Creative Idea: "Remove COD for International Shipping" to prevent refused deliveries.

Play #3: The B2B Experience (Retention)

  • The Concept: Create a VIP checkout experience for wholesale clients.

  • The Logic: Wholesale buyers need "Net Terms" or "Invoice" options, while retail customers need Credit Cards. Segmenting them prevents retail customers from accidentally selecting "Pay Later."

  • Configuration Strategy:

    • Trigger/Condition: Customer Input -> Trigger on Customer Tag Wholesale or Metafield.

    • Key Setting: Conditionally Remove Gateways -> Target consumer methods like Afterpay or Klarna for B2B users.

    • Copy/Creative Idea: "Wholesale Checkout: Invoice Only."

Pro-Tips & Constraints

  • Smart Constraint: Logos cannot be renamed. You cannot change the text for payment methods that use a logo as their name (e.g., PayPal, Apple Pay).

  • Integration Note: This customization is not compatible with Shop Pay. It will not hide or rename the Shop Pay express checkout button.

  • Optimization Tip: Use the Reorder Gateways campaign to push your preferred payment method (the one with the lowest transaction fees) to the top of the list, subtly nudging customers to choose it.

Important Limitations

Before configuring this tool, please be aware of the following Shopify restrictions displayed in the app:

  • Renaming: You cannot rename payment methods that use a logo as their name (e.g., you cannot rename the official "PayPal" logo text).

  • Shop Pay: Payment customizations are not compatible with Shop Pay. Changes made here will not affect the Shop Pay express checkout button.

Configuration Guide

Step 1: Select Function Input

The function input determines what data enables your logic. Select the input that best matches your trigger criteria:

  • Standard Input: Provides flexibility for building general payment functions and accessing commonly used fields.

  • Delivery Input: Focuses on delivery fields. Use this if you want to hide/change payments based on shipping destination or method.

  • Shipping Input: Contains input fields focused on the selected shipping option.

  • Customer Input: Contains fields related to the customer profile (e.g., isAuthenticated, tags, or metafields).

Step 2: Select a Campaign

Choose the specific action you want to perform on the payment gateways:

  1. Conditionally Remove Gateways: Hides specific payment methods if conditions are met (e.g., Hide "Cash on Delivery" for international orders).

  2. Change Name: Renames a selected gateway (e.g., Change "Bank Deposit" to "Wire Transfer via Chase").

  3. Reorder Gateways: Changes the sorting order of payment methods presented to the customer.

Step 3: Define Logic & Qualifiers

This section controls when the customization happens.

  • Campaign Name: Give your customization an internal name (e.g., "Remove Payment method").

  • Qualifier Behavior:

    • Remove if any qualify: The rule triggers if at least one condition matches.

    • Remove if all qualify: The rule triggers only if every condition set below is met.

Setting Triggers

You can filter based on:

  • Customer Qualifier: Target specific customers using Customer tags. enter the key and value (e.g., Canadian Forces) and click Add.

  • Line Item Qualifiers: Target based on the products in the cart.

    • Properties: Filter by custom line item properties (e.g., Fabric Pattern : CADPAT MT)1.

    • Product Variants: Filter by specific variant names.

Step 4: Select Target Gateways

Finally, specify which payment gateways should be affected by the rules above.

  • Gateway to Remove Selector: Type the name of the gateway you wish to target.

  • Active Targets: The system accepts comma-separated inputs. Common examples include: PayPal, Shopify Payments, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Shop Pay, etc..
